Absolutes
Absolutes are highly concentrated aromatic oils extracted from plants using a solvent method.
The multi-step process involves extracting the aromatic oil with a chemical solvent like hexane, resulting in a waxy substance called a concrete.
Ethyl alcohol is then used to extract the aromatic oils from the concrete, leaving behind an absolute with a scent resembling the original plant.
Absolutes are the most concentrated form of fragrance used in natural perfumery.
Unlike essential oils, they also contain a higher density of coloring, waxes, and other plant constituents.
Typically, absolutes retain a small percentage of alcohol from the extraction process, usually up to 2 or 3 percent.
