Essential oils are concentrated aromatic materials obtained from plants. They capture many of the volatile compounds responsible for the characteristic scent of flowers, leaves, woods, roots, herbs, spices and citrus fruits.
Extraction and Character
Most essential oils are produced by steam distillation, while citrus oils are often obtained through expression or cold pressing. The extraction method, plant variety, growing conditions and harvest can all influence the aroma and composition of the finished oil.
Using Essential Oils in Formulation
Essential oils bring natural complexity, texture and botanical character to perfumes and cosmetic formulations. As naturally variable materials, their scent and composition may differ slightly between batches.
