About Preservatives

Preservatives are functional ingredients used to help control the growth of bacteria, yeast and mould within cosmetic formulations. An appropriate preservation system is especially important for products containing water or those likely to come into contact with water during normal use.

Why Preservation Matters

Microbial contamination can affect a product’s safety, stability, appearance, texture and odour. Effective preservation forms one part of a wider formulation process that also includes good manufacturing practice, hygienic handling, suitable packaging and appropriate storage.

Choosing a Preservative

There is no universal preservative suitable for every formulation. Performance can be influenced by pH, solubility, processing temperature, ingredient compatibility, packaging, intended use and the amount of available water within the product.

Testing Your Formulation

Always follow the supplier’s recommended usage range and processing instructions. A preservative should not be assumed effective simply because it has been included in a formula. Finished products may require stability, compatibility and microbiological challenge testing, together with an appropriate safety assessment for their intended use and market.
