About Absolutes

Absolutes are highly concentrated aromatic extracts valued for their richness, complexity and close resemblance to the scent of the original plant material. They are particularly important for delicate flowers and botanicals that do not respond well to steam distillation.

How Absolutes Are Produced

Plant material is usually extracted with a solvent to produce a fragrant, waxy material known as a concrete. The concrete is then processed with alcohol and filtered to separate the aromatic compounds from much of the remaining wax and plant matter. After the alcohol is removed, the concentrated material that remains is called an absolute.

Character in Formulation

Compared with many essential oils, absolutes can contain a broader range of aromatic and heavier plant constituents. This often gives them greater depth, colour and texture. Their consistency can range from pourable liquid to thick paste or semi-solid material, depending on the plant and temperature.

Absolutes are highly concentrated and are often used sparingly within a formula. Their appearance, consistency and aroma may vary naturally between batches. Always check the product description, stated concentration and available technical documentation before use.
