About this material
Evernia Prunastri Extract
Rich. Earthy. Timeless.
Oakmoss is a perfumer’s classic—an evocative essence that captures the damp, forested undergrowth where moss carpets ancient oak trees. Deeply grounding and slightly leathery, its aroma is at once earthy, woody, and green, with a subtle mineral touch that lends mystery and sophistication.
Our luxurious signature absolute is a cornerstone in fine perfumery, celebrated for its ability to anchor and balance compositions. Used in chypres, fougères, and elegant oriental blends, Oakmoss imparts depth, persistence, and a velvety smoothness that transforms a fragrance into something unforgettable.
Use as a Base note for perfumes, colognes, and artisanal blends
Whether as the backbone of a refined chypre or the grounding note in a modern unisex fragrance, Oakmoss Absolute is a timeless ingredient for creators who seek elegance and depth in their work.

CAS numbers (comment): The scope of this Standard includes, but is not limited to the CAS number(s) indicated above; any other CAS number(s) used to identify these fragrance ingredients should be considered in scope as well.
Contributions from other sources: None to consider
Flavor use consideration: Due to the possible ingestion of small amounts of fragrance ingredients from their use in products in Categories 1 and 6, materials must not only comply with IFRA Standards but must also be recognized as safe as a flavoring ingredient as defined by the IOFI Code of Practice (www.iofi.org). For more details see chapter 1 of the Guidance for the use of IFRA Standards.
IFRA Standard type: RESTRICTION_SPECIFICATION
Intrinsic property driving the risk management measure: DERMAL SENSITIZATION
Restricted ingredients: notes: For Oakmoss and Treemoss extracts, the restrictions in the Standards are directly linked to the presence of Atranol and Chloroatranol in the finished products. To ensure that those remain below trace levels, the upper concentration levels have not been increased (compared its last publication in the Amendment 43 (2008)). In the presence of Treemoss extracts, the level of Oakmoss in the respective category has to be reduced accordingly, such that the total amount of both extracts does not exceed the maximum permitted level in each category as listed in the table above. If the same fragrance mixture is intended to be used in more than one IFRA Category, then the most restrictive limitation (based on foreseen use concentrations and maximum permitted level) will apply.
Specified ingredients: notes: Oakmoss extracts must not contain added Treemoss, which is a source of resin acids. Traces of resin acids may be carried over to commercial qualities of Oakmoss in the manufacturing process. These traces must not exceed 0.1% (1000 ppm) of Dehydroabietic acid (DHA) in the extract. The concentration of resin acids in Oakmoss can be measured with an High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Reverse Phase – Spectrofluorometry method. Further, levels of Atranol and Chloroatranol should each be below 100 ppm in Oakmoss extracts.

Creative ideas to explore
Creative directions, not tested formulas.Smoke and petals
With rose and a clear floral accordExplore a smoky rose sketch by setting the listed smoke character beside a familiar flower. Compare it with the rose alone, deciding whether the accent suggests a distant atmosphere, a charred edge or too much darkness.
Timber and embers
With sandalwood and dry wood directionsBuild a wood-focused study with the smoky material as the changing element. Compare a smooth wood setting with a drier one and keep notes on the difference between a recognisable timber impression and an abstract smoke effect.
A bright interruption
With bergamot and an aromatic openingTry citrus brightness as a deliberate contrast to the smoky direction. Compare a matching version without the citrus, then judge whether the opening creates a useful transition into smoke or belongs to a different composition.
