Bourgeonal
Bourgeonal is a powerful, diffusive fresh floral muguet, with a watery green character.
It is a synthetic aromatic aldehyde that is most commonly used in fragrances and perfumes, soaps, detergents and cosmetics due to its pleasing floral aroma.
It is commonly used in combination with muguet aldehydes such as Florosa
Bourgeonal is also notable in scientific studies for its effect on human sperm cells. It can activate certain olfactory receptors (like OR1D2) which is expressed in both the nose and in sperm, influencing chemotaxis – a phenomenon where sperm move in response to chemical stimuli. This has made it a subject of interest in reproductive biology and chemosensory research.
Despite its biological effects in lab studies, bourgeonal is not naturally occurring and is mainly of interest in biochemical and fragrance applications.
