Okoumal (G)
Okoumal by Givaudan, also known as Woody Dioxolane is a synthetic fragrance molecule praised for its richness, warmth and longevity.
Okoumal delivers an elegant blend of woody, ambery, smoky tobacco, and musky tones.
At low use levels; 0.5 % to 1 % it instantly adds body and volume to compositions without overpowering them and at higher dosage (up to 4 %) intensifies richness and depth.
With a very low vapor pressure and high molecular weight, Okoumal is a true heart or base note and will linger for over a month on a blotter and/or fabric, providing excellent substantivity in both wet and dry applications.
According to Givaudan, it remains stable across pH levels and in form factors ranging from shampoo, soap, detergents to antiperspirants—rated highly in most tested conditions.
Ideal pairings include cedar derivatives, Patchouli and sandalwood molecules (e.g., Ebanol™), where it reinforces and enhances a woody-amber depth.
Okoumal is great for:
-
Amber, tobacco, and musk accords: It reinforces warm, smoky, earthy facets in Oriental, Chypre, Fougère, and leather bases.
-
Fixative power: Adds projection and longevity without heaviness.
-
Texture enhancing: Offers a “velvety” or “powdery” feel, making mature or leather-like woods more sophisticated and with a tobacco‑tinged softness.
-
Adding subtle sparkle: Ideal at low levels to lift woods with a soft sheen rather than overt brightness.
In summary; Okoumal is a high‑performance woody‑amber aroma chemical, beloved by perfumers for its ability to build warmth and complexity, act as a fixative, and improve texture in a wide variety of fragrance structures.
Its blend of tobacco-like softness and musky amber richness makes it a dependable choice for durable, elegant and sophisticated compositions.
