Citral EX
Citral is a naturally occurring organic compound classified as a terpenoid.
It’s best known for its strong lemon-like aroma and is a major component in the essential oils of several plants, especially lemongrass, lemon myrtle, and citrus fruits.
It is an unsaturated aldehyde that exists as a mixture of two geometric isomers:
- Geranial (citral A) has a strong lemon scent.
- Neral (citral B) has a slightly sweeter, less intense lemon odour.
Used extensively in perfume to impart citrus notes and as a starting material for synthesising other compounds like Ionones, and Methyl Ionones (important in fragrance chemistry).
It is also used as an antimicrobial agent in natural medicine.
A solid alternative that may be considered in place of this classic Lemon material is Citroasis Base by Firmenich.
