Vetiveryl Acetate ex Haiti is a refined ester obtained via acetylation of natural vetiver oil; specifically, oil sourced from Haiti, which is prized for its floral‑woody balance.

Haitian oil is commonly regarded as one of the best quality sources available and this oil makes no exception.

Traditionally, Vetiveryl Acetate is produced via the esterification of Vetiverol—an alcohol fraction extracted from Vetiver essential oil; with either acetic acid or acetic anhydride.

The process generally involves several key steps:

Extraction of essential oil from vetiver roots
Isolation of the vetiverol fraction
Esterification with acetic acid or acetic anhydride
Use of sulfuric acid or another catalyst to promote the reaction

This multi-step synthesis contributes to the high cost of Vetiveryl Acetate.

Isolating Vetiverol is labour-intensive and yields are typically low.

Additionally, conventional chemical methods can lead to undesirable side reactions and incomplete esterification of certain alcohol components.

In the Haitian variant, the Vetiver essential oil is acetylated; not just the isolated vetiverol, resulting in a product with a distinct CAS number (e.g., 84082‑84‑8) compared to the material derived from Java.

Vetiveryl acetate is typically described as sweet-woody, dry yet fresh, and exceptionally smooth. It offers excellent longevity and functions well as a fixative. Vetiveryl Acetate ex Haiti however is known for its grapefruit-like top notes, well-balanced woodiness, soft smokiness, and delicate powdery or amber nuances.

Often characterised as “velvety-smooth,” lacking the harsher, smoky aspects commonly found in raw vetiver oil.

Some perfumers, however, find its aroma more restrained compared to pure vetiver, describing it as “like a cardboard cut-out”—a more refined, polished interpretation of woody vetiver.

Vetiveryl acetate functions as a long-lasting base note, imparting depth and a dry-woody foundation. It’s particularly suited for:
