Benzyl Alcohol
Benzyl Alcohol is a natural component of a number of essential oils; including Jasmine, Styrax and Ylang Ylang. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that allows this material to be effectively used as a preservative, even in its synthetic form, prolonging the freshness of a formula by stopping bacteria from forming a wall around itself; meaning a second generation of microbes will be unable to form.
Use as a natural fixative and blending agent in floral compositions.
Arctander says of this material: “Used in perfumery as a blender, in some florals quite extensively. Jasmine, Gardenia and Lilac may often be composed using Benzyl Alcohol”
