Fenchol also known as Fenchyl Alcohol is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid alcohol.

Whilst it is the ideal complement to many fragrances, this material stands out remarkably on its own. 

Fenchyl Alcohol proves intriguing and valuable for crafting specific atmospheres and adding depth to compositions. 

It enhances authenticity when utilised sparingly in blends.

If you are acquainted with Geosmin, you may recognise its key descriptors including cold, damp, earthy, and rain-like qualities. Similarly, Fenchyl Alcohol exhibits comparable characteristics, saturating the environment with a cold presence and yielding similar damp, earthy, soil aromas. It’s totally unique and the perfect accent material for any perfumer serious about their craft.

It is often described as pine-like and camphoraceous. However we interpret Fenchyl Alcohol as fresh, earthy, damp, very reminiscent of wet soil after a rainfall. The often humid and wet, earthy scent associated with being underground, in cellars, historic structures, old churches and cathedrals also spring to mind. 

There is definately a spiritual undertone emanating from this material. The recreation of the nostalgic old church scent is therefore achievable with Fenchyl Alcohol, particularly when combined with Frankincense materials, notably Olibanum Resinoid.

It integrates perfectly into aromatic blends alongside mossy, earthy, mushroomy, damp, and musty elements.

Utilised extensively in the field of perfumery, this ingredient harmonises excellently with lemon-lime undertones, lending strength and elevation to floral scents. 

It is often incorporated into mushroom-related products in unison with Mushroom Absolute to impart earthy accents at the top notes and works wonders in recreating the scent of a natural forest floor when used in combination with Patchouli and Oakmoss

It is naturally occurring in Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum), Cedarwood Oil, Pine oils, Eucalyptus Leaves, Wild Celery, Nutmeg and Aster family plants

It has a bicyclic structure with a hydroxyl group (–OH) attached to a camphane-like skeleton, similar to camphor and borneol

Fenchol exists as stereoisomers — the most common is (1R)-endo-fenchol. It’s closely related to borneol and menthol, sharing the characteristic terpene structure.

It is sometimes used in the synthesis of other compounds in the fragrance and pharmaceutical industries.

Some studies suggest fenchol may have Antibacterial and Antifungal properties.

It is normally extracted via steam distillation from plant sources like basil, followed by fractional distillation or chromatography to purify.

It can be synthesised from α-pinene (another monoterpene) through a multistep reaction involving acid-catalyzed hydration and rearrangement. Alternatively, from fenchone (a ketone) by reduction (e.g., using sodium borohydride or LiAlH₄) to form Fenchol.

It can also be found in certain cannabis strains. Cannabis strains that contain high amounts include OG Kush and Banana Kush. Other strains also contain it, but in lower quantities, such as Apple Fritter, Atomic Sour Grapefruit and Pyramid.
