TEC
Triethyl citrate; otherwise known as Tri-Ethyl Citrate and commonly referred to as TEC is the triethyl ester of citric acid and appears as a colourless to tinged yellow liquid.
It is a versatile solvent suitable for oily substances, crystals, powders and resins, serving as a safer alternative to highly toxic phthalates like DEP, offering an effective solution for dissolving challenging ingredients.
It’s practically odourless, carrying only subtle notes of mild fruity wine and plum.
Originally developed for applications outside of perfumery and flavour work, this ester has gained popularity as a blender, solvent and diluent and fixative in perfumes.
In fragrance compositions, its role goes beyond that of a simple diluent; when combined with more volatile ingredients, it imparts a soft, mellow, warm-fruity undertone and often adds a winey-sweet top note. It is particularly effective and intriguing in rose-based fragrances.
Widely used in cosmetics and fragrances as a fixative to slow the evaporation of volatile components, allowing fragrances to last longer on the skin and in the air.
